Trauma release – Deep nervous system contact – Developing emotional regulation

I have recently received training from Janet Evergreen on stimulating the parasympathetic relaxation response in the vagus nerve system through gentle touch and mindful verbal cues. This powerful somatic modality centers the client’s experience in order to help them become more aware of their own bodily sensations, and through that awareness of body, develop the ability to become aware of and remain present with their full range of emotional states.

During these somatic sessions, we will move with our awareness through the layers of the body, including the skin, the fascia, and certain internal organs. I will provide verbal cues to help my client bring their attention to their bodily sensations. This work often brings up powerful emotional responses, and while deeply healing, can be quite intense.

My primary goal is to create a space of safety where these sensations and emotions can arise and the nervous system can ultimately enter a state of parasympathetic relaxation. This is the “rest and digest” state so critical to our bodies’ healthy functioning, supported by  the relationship between therapist and client.

These verbally-cued somatic sessions differ from my regular massage sessions in several important ways: they are more involved on the part of the client; they include verbal cues; and the quality of the touch is lighter.

I will continue to offer my regular nervous system-oriented deep tissue massage sessions.
